My name is Petunia and I had a rough start in life – I came from a hoarding situation. I was very pregnant and malnourished when KGARL took me in. I delivered 6 beautiful puppies less than 36 hours later. My foster mom says I am the best mama and took great care of my babies, but now it’s time for me to find my forever home.

My perfect home would have another dog for me to play with, is calm, has a fenced yard, and has no children or frequent visitors under 14 years of age. I’ve come a long way and love my foster family but it took me a few months to get here. I still run if anyone moves too quickly or reaches for me. My new family will need to be patient and earn my trust. Once you do, you’ll be my world. I love sitting on the couch and getting tummy rubs, but I don’t want to feel confined. In true terrier form, I occasionally dig in the back yard and I bark at the cat in my foster home.

From Petunia’s Foster Mom: Petunia is such a wonderful girl. She dances and smiles when she sees us. She’s so cute when she plays with Sampson, her foster brother (Cavalier mix), and she loves snuggling with him. She watched him interact with us and I think it’s partially how she learned to trust. Small pieces of cheddar cheese didn’t hurt – LOL. She loves it and learned to take it from our hands.

Petunia’s new family will need to work with her on walking on a leash – she’ll need a harness, not a collar, so she can’t get free. She has chewed some things (reading glasses, charging cord, remote control, etc.) but we hope that will subside when her hormones settle down. She’s learning to go to the door to go outside but doesn’t always show signs so consistency will be key. She will use potty pads. Once Petunia settles into a routine in her new home, she will be a wonderful companion.

If you are ready for a 15-20 year commitment, please visit our website to read our adoption requirements, and submit an application if interested in meeting Petunia.

Adoption process

Submitting an application does not guarantee a specific dog or cat.  We strive to match the personality and needs of our foster dogs and cats to a family who will best fulfill those needs.  If a family is not approved for a particular pet, it does not mean they will not be a good pet owner, it just means that their needs and the needs of the particular pet don’t match. We do not adopt on a “first come, first serve” basis.

Once your application is received, the application process begins.  We will review your application, check your references, check with your vet (if there are other animals in the household), speak to a landlord (if you rent), and arrange for a home visit.

Once your application is pre-approved (meaning, we don't see any red flags based on our preliminary review of your application), the applicant may be invited to meet their potential family member at a location convenient to the foster family (usually at the King George Petco).  Adoptions will NOT take place at the meet & greet, this is just a chance for us to get to know you and for you to spend time with our animals. After the meet and greet, we will ask that you spend some time thinking over your decision and we will do the same.

After the application review process is complete (meet & greet with animal, home visit, reference/vet checks, background check, etc.), if all is acceptable to both adopter and KGARL and we all agree to move forward, we will schedule a day/time to finalize the adoption. The adopter will be asked to sign the final paperwork and we will collect the adoption fee (cash, check, or paypal are all acceptable).  At this time, you can either pick up your pet, or schedule a time to do so. Adopters will be required to schedule an appointment with their veterinarian of choice within 15 days of taking your new pet home.

Please note that we do not do same day adoptions. If you are applying for a popular animal (such as puppies, small dogs, or special breeds), it can take several days for our volunteers to reach a decision that is best for the animal. We understand that it's difficult to wait, but please don't email us multiple times a day to check on the status of your application. We are a very small group and the same people that are reviewing your application are also replying to hundreds of emails and Facebook messages. We are all volunteers and have full time jobs outside of KGARL, so any time spent replying to emails/messages is time we are not reviewing your application.

All Adoptions Include:
